Message from the Associate Vice President of Public Safety

Dear Hokies,

I hope this message finds you well. As the Interim Associate Vice President for Public Safety, I want to take this opportunity to share a little about the Virginia Tech Public Safety Division and its mission. We are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors that maximizes everyone’s opportunity for success. Public Safety at Virginia Tech has five core areas of responsibility that resonate across the entire university; campus police, emergency response, environmental health and safety, emergency medical services, and youth protection.

Through collaboration, dedication, training, and community engagement, we strive to provide a comprehensive and responsive approach in all of our public safety programs. Our mission of advancing safety, security, health and preparedness is anchored by the Virginia Tech Principles of Community. These fundamental values; mutual respect, civility, and service are foundational to our programs and are exemplified in our interactions with the campus community.

One of the most import pillars of public safety is preparedness and prevention, we work to build an informed and ready community through proactive outreach, building strong relationships with our community for you to be “Be Hokie Ready.” We encourage everyone to stay engaged and take advantage of the resources and programs available to you.

Public safety is a shared responsibility. If you see something, say something. Your observations and actions can help us all maintain a safe university environment.

We are here for you. The Division of Public Safety at Virginia Tech is dedicated to open communication and we are always available to take your questions, concerns, or suggestions on how we can better serve you. Together, we are the foundation of a safe and thriving Virginia Tech community.

Stay safe and take care.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Mulhare, P.E.
