Report a concern

Concerned about a minor's safety? If a child is in immediate danger, call 911. For anything else, use the reporting options below.

 

Reporting suspected abuse, neglect, or a crime

If you know or suspect child abuse or neglect, you must report it as soon as possible and no later than 24 hours after having reason to suspect it. Report to all of the following:

  1. Your Program Supervisor, and
  2. Virginia Tech Police at (540) 382-4343, or 911 when deemed necessary in consultation with the program supervisor, and
  3. The local Social Services department of the county or city where the child resides or where the abuse or neglect is believed to have occurred. If you are unsure which locality to contact, call the Virginia Department of Social Services child abuse and neglect hotline at (800) 552-7096.

Failure to report carries criminal penalties under Virginia Code § 63.2-1509: $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for subsequent offenses. Failure to report rape is punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor, up to 12 months incarceration and/or a $2,500 fine.

Reporting harassment or discrimination

To report violations of Title IX or harassment and discrimination policy, contact the Office for Civil Rights Compliance and Prevention Education. Relevant policies: VT Policy 1025 and VT Policy 1026.

Reporting a youth protection policy violation

If it appears that youth protection policy or guidelines were not followed in any Virginia Tech, Virginia Cooperative Extension, or Virginia 4-H event, email youthprotection@vt.edu or call 540-231-1377. Include the section of the policy you believe was violated, the circumstances that lead you to believe a violation occurred, and the best way to reach you.
